Being a cheerleader for Michigan State University means everything to me. It has become a huge, important part of my life and I am so lucky to have the opportunity to be a part of this program. I have learned so many new things and have met people who have become, and will continue to be, my best friends for the rest of my life. I can’t quite describe what its like to be out on the field at Spartan Stadium or in front of the IZZONE at the Breslin with my teammates, but I can say it is one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. This also applies to the little things, such as taking a picture with a child, signing autographs, and interacting with the fans that are so grateful to be at the same event as us. Being a part of the cheerleading program has allowed me to be a central part of the great traditions here at Michigan State. Tradition is something that is handed down generation after generation, something that never really dies. The greatest, and my favorite, tradition is the MSU Fight Song. From cheer camp to college sports fans, our fight song is known all over the country for its uniqueness. You can almost always find someone in the crowd doing the arm circles along with us. Some of my other favorite traditions include pregame at football games, touchdowns, band chants, and the alumni coming back for Homecoming. Although traditions change, die out, and new traditions are started, I am happy to have shared some of the same experiences as the alumni have. I have had so many memorable experiences since I have begun cheering at MSU. There have been trick plays, close games, even game winning buzzer beaters, but my most memorable experience is the first time I stepped out onto the field at Spartan Stadium for pregame. At this point, it still hadn’t hit me that I had made the team. Stepping out onto the 50-yard line, it was almost overwhelming being the center of attention among 75,000 people. When Thunderstruck started playing, there was so much energy. Being on the field was much more intense than sitting anywhere else in the stadium. I remember seeing the football team and turning and running for my life down the field. It was so exciting and also terrifying having the entire football who’s twice your size running down the field after you. Its one of those things I will never forget and I get to experience it game after game. Like I said earlier, I can’t express how lucky I am to be a part of the Michigan State Cheerleading program.
